Yesterday was a special day. I was initiated into the ECU Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa and inducted as an officer—Vice President of History and Traditions.
Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society, recognizes and encourages superior leadership and exemplary character.
A bit of history: at its inception, women could not be inducted into the society. It wasn’t until March of 1974—exactly 50 years ago—that the initiation of women was approved.
As I stand proudly in my stole as an officer and initiate, I’m reminded of a few important lessons:
1. Seize the moment.
When opportunities present themselves in various seasons, especially those meant for you, reach out and grab hold of them. Do your due diligence and take action. Too many of us watch and wish. We see others achieving and somehow convince ourselves that what we see in others could never become our reality. That’s a myth. If I can do it, you can do it too. May every photo in this post be a reminder that YOU CAN DO IT TOO!
2. Position yourself to win.
When I was accepted into the Clinical Counseling graduate program at ECU, I made the decision to fully embrace the information, continuing education, personal development, and opportunities for connection available to me. Last week, I attended the ODK National Leadership Conference, and it was phenomenal. Sometimes it’s not about a title, a photo, or content for a social media post. The motivation to pursue lies in the access the opportunity affords you. Selah.
3. Don’t underestimate the power of community.
In community, you often encounter “sandpaper”—people or events that reveal personal opportunities for growth while exposing you to new mindsets and paths to success. Other times, you experience “wallpaper”—connections that add value, color, and texture to your life. Both are necessary.
We live in a world where isolation may seem like the safest place. While it might feel warm and cozy, are you growing? Don’t let isolation or fear of discomfort stunt your growth. Strength and resilience are often birthed through community. Get uncomfortable and get connected!
4. Embrace the value of support.
I didn’t think I needed people to show up for me. In fact, I wasn’t even going to mention the initiation. I didn’t know what to expect and didn’t want to waste anyone’s time. Honestly, like many of us, I’ve been conditioned to downplay moments that should be celebrated. That’s another myth.
Having my friends and family in the audience, knowing there are people willing to go out of their way to show up for me, was empowering. Their support strengthened me and reminded me that I am not alone. Sometimes we don’t know what we need until we experience it fully. This was a moment I didn’t realize I needed—a moment I never would have experienced if I hadn’t asked for it.
I write to remind you that YOU MATTER. Celebrate your milestones and give others the opportunity to celebrate with you. You deserve it—and you need it more than you know.
I write to inspire you. Moments like these aren’t just personal wins—they’re proof that if you can see it, you can have it! The only difference between you and me is my “yes” when the opportunity presented itself. I dare you to bet on YOU!
Seize your moments, take the opportunities, and let others show up for you. Your story is worth celebrating, and your growth is worth it.
Let’s grow together!
With love,
Gwen
